about

I once wrote a song called “Barcelona” while staring at a photo on the wall I took of a cactus garden in Spain. But I knew I had more to say about Guyana. What happened in Barcelona anyway? Not much. I smoked a cigarette for the first time and it was too cold to swim.

I remembered the photo Alyssa has on her wall of her mother as a young woman in Guyana.

You know, we talked a lot about what her film will be about. And despite having great conversations, I still won’t know until I see it. But we shared ideas. And one of the words we talked about was divorce. No, not a crumbling marriage but still, a divorce: half of the population leaves and carries with them an image of the other half, frozen in time, immovable, unchanging. And they don’t heal, not really. They see each other now and then. They dress well for the occasion, looking to perhaps...impress the other? Still assuming the other knows so much about your flaws and and vulnerabilities despite the massive geographical and time gap between you.

But maybe, two people could meet, after so many years, who parted in undesirable conditions, share with each other good memories of one another, accept the gap between them, because only such a huge space could allow someone to be the keeper of that frozen memory. You, no matter the pain caused, have been sealed in someone’s heart exactly as beautifully as you once were. You are still here in your youth, in your prime, in that way. A long life we have not shared, and yet I love you.

lyrics

And I remember O Guyana
I wrote your name on the banks of the seawall at low tide
your picture is on my wall

I swear I have not forgotten
I live with a hole the shape of you
My lotus blossom, my forest mango tree

O Guyana

The distant sight of you
my favorite golden hue
the night wind combs your hair
a long life we have not shared
